The Young Researchers Training Programme, supported by the Slovenian Research Agency, has been running successfully since 1985 with the aim of rejuvenating research teams and bringing in fresh ideas and approaches. The programme enables young researchers to participate in research during their postgraduate studies on the basis of a fixed-term employment contract.
Darja Zabavnik: "The benefits of becoming a young researcher can be defined from two somewhat related perspectives. Firstly, by being employed in a research organisation, young researchers are gradually involved in research work on basic or applied research projects on the basis of a training programme. In this way, young researchers gain invaluable experience and develop additional skills for the research jobs that are increasingly in demand today. Secondly, the advantage of the young researcher status, which is linked to the continuation of studies at the third Bologna level, is also that it allows the individual to devote more time to his or her own research work for the preparation of the doctoral thesis and to additional training abroad. In addition, the experience, advice and help of colleagues is invaluable in the preparation of the dissertation, which has the additional effect of broadening the knowledge and understanding of the research area of the dissertation".
Enia Bearzotti: "The Young Researcher position is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to get closer to the world of economic research. As young researchers, the Institute of Economic Research provides us with a fully-funded PhD programme that gives us a deeper understanding of the core issues in economics. Through our doctoral research, we develop excellent analytical skills and gain experience of how empirical economic research is conducted in practice. In addition, we can gain even more work experience by participating in IER's applied research projects, which allow us to integrate or become integrated into the working environment. We work in close contact with experienced researchers, who support us when needed and from whom we can learn a lot. If we want to further develop our knowledge and skills, we can also attend additional specialised courses and trainings of our choice at internationally renowned institutions abroad".
